Ekstrom Records Career-High Three Hits In Loss To Carleton

COCOA BEACH, Flor. - The Webster University softball team continued spring break play with a game against Carleton College. The Gorloks scored a run in the first and two in the seventh but fell short to the Knights by the score of 3-5. WU's Kacey Ekstrom recorded a career-high three hits in the defeat. 

Webster opened this neutral site decision with the bats as Isabelle Loiben led off the game with a solo homerun over the left center left wall that gave the Gorloks the 1-0 early lead. With one out, Natalie Puente laced a single but the Gorloks left two runners on. 

In the bottom half, Addison Penn earned the start in the circle and recorded a scoreless inning with a lineout, a looking strikeout, and a groundout. In the bottom of the second, Penn recorded her second consecutive scoreless inning that included three groundouts. 

In the top of the third, Ekstrom laced a one-out single to left but she was left stranded. In the bottom frame, Penn recorded two quick flyouts then allowed a triple. With a runner on third, Penn delivered a wild pitch which allowed the runner to score that tied the game at 1-1. Penn got out of the inning with a lineout. 

In the bottom of the fourth, Carleton recorded back-to-back hits. With one out and runners in scoring position, the Knights took the 2-1 lead on an error by Webster. With runners on the corner, Carleton increased the deficit to 1-3 with an RBI single to right. Moments later, Carleton closed out the three-run inning with an RBI single to left center that made the score 1-4. Penn got out of the inning with a popout and a groundout. 

In the top of fifth, Hale recorded a one-out single to center and advanced to second on a single to left center by Ekstrom. However, both runners were left stranded as the inning ended with 5-3 doubleplay. In the bottom of the fifth, Penn recorded her third scoreless inning of the game with a lineout, a popout, and a strikeout. 

In the bottom of the sixth, Webster made a pitching change to Brystol Klossner as she got in a jam by an error, a sac bunt, and a walk. With two outs, Carleton added a run on an RBI single to center that made the score 1-5. 

In the top of the seventh, Abigail Chandler led off and was awarded first base on a hit-by-pitch. Moments later, Chandler advanced to second on a single by Paige Vogelgesang. Shortly later, both runners advanced a base on a wild pitch. With runners in scoring position and two outs, Ekstrom laced an RBI single to right center that scored Chandler. 

The inning continued with a pinch-hit walk drawn by Ava Reinecke that advanced Ekstrom to second. With the bases loaded, Puentes was hit by the pitch that allowed Vogelgesang to score. That run scored by Vogelgesang ended up being the final run of the game for Webster which generated the loss. 

For the game, Ekstrom led the team with three hits while Loiben, Hale, and Puentes added a hit each. Loiben, Ekstrom, and Puentes drove in a run each. In the circle, Penn pitched five innings and recorded two strikeouts. Klossner delivered one inning of relief and allowed just one hit.
