Gorloks Baseball Season Ends in Regionals

ADRIAN, Mich. - The Webster University baseball team continued NCAA Div. III Baseball Regional play with two games on Saturday. The Gorloks fell to DePauw University 2-11 then dropped the nightcap decision to #16 Adrian College by the score of 1-2 which ended their season. The Gorloks end their season with a 31-16 overall record. 

Game 1: Webster 2, DePauw 11
Webster opened this decision with the bats and were sent down in order. In the bottom of the first, Carter Hunt earned the start on the mound and recorded a scoreless inning with a groundout, a flyout, and a strikeout. 

In the second, Reid Hietpas recorded a one-out double down the right field line but was left stranded. In the bottom frame, DePauw scored seven runs on six hits which included four singles and two doubles. 

In the top of the third, James Theodore recorded a two-out single up the middle and advanced to third on a single to center by Adam Moser. However, both runners were left stranded. In the bottom half, Webster made a pitching change to Quinton Johnston as he sent down the Tigers in order with a foul out to first, a groundout, and a flyout. 

In the top of the fourth, Nick Wrubluski led off with a single up the middle and advanced to second on a walk drawn by Hietpas. With two runners on, Ryan Hartz laced a single through the left side that loaded the bases. With the bases loaded, Ethan Wielt grounded into a doubleplay that scored Wrubluski that made the score 1-7. In the bottom half, Johnston recorded a scoreless inning with a groundout and a 6-4-3 doubleplay. 

In the fifth, both teams did not score a run as Johnston recorded his third scoreless inning with two flyouts and a strikeout. 

In the top of the sixth, Hietpas blasted a solo homer over the wall in left center that made the score 2-7. In the bottom half, Johnston recorded his fourth scoreless inning with two flyouts and a pickoff at first. 

In the bottom of the seventh, Johnston allowed back-to-back walks that ended his outing. Webster then called upon Collin Johnson when the Tigers recorded three consecutive hits that produced three runs and made the score 2-10. With no outs, DePauw added a run on a groundout to short that made the score 2-11. Johnson got out of the inning with a 6-4-3 doubleplay. 

In the top of the eighth, Dalton Groves and Hietpas recorded singles to center. Moments later, Andrew Xenakis drew a pinch-hit walk that loaded the bases. However, the Gorloks grounded into a 6-1 doubleplay that ended the inning. In the bottom half, Webster called upon reliever Shane LeJeune-DeAcutis as he recorded a scoreless inning with two fielder's choice groundouts and a flyout. 

In the top of the ninth, Jonah Taylor recorded a two-out pinch-hit single up the middle but did not advance any further which ended the game. 

For the game, Hietpas went 3-for-3 with an RBI while Moser had two hits. On the mound, Hunt pitched two innings, struckout two batters, and allowed seven runs. Johnston delivered four innings of relief, struckout one batter, and allowed two runs. Johnson pitched one inning and allowed two runs. LeJeune-DeAcutis pitched one inning and allowed one hit. 

Game 2: Webster 1, Adrian 2
Theodore led off the elimination game with a single to center and later advanced to second by Groves. However, Theodore was left stranded in scoring position. The SLIAC Freshman of the Year Colt Armbrust got the start on the mound and sent down Adrian in order with a flyout, a groundout, and a lineout. 

In the top of the second Hietpas led off with a single to left center and got out on a 6-4-3 doubleplay. Hartz followed up with a walk but was left on first. In the bottom half, Armbrust recorded his second scoreless inning with two strikeouts and a flyout. 

In the third inning, both teams did not score a run as Armbrust sent down the Bulldogs in order with a groundout, a strikeout, and a flyout. 

In the top of the fourth, Wrubluski recorded a one-out single up the middle and later stole second. With two outs, Wielt got the Gorloks on the board with an RBI single to left that made the score 1-0. In the bottom half, Armbrust had a quick inning with a popout and two flyouts that kept the one-run lead. 

In the fifth inning, both teams were held scoreless as Armbrust recorded a strikeout, a flyout, and a groundout. 

In the top of the sixth, Groves led off with a single up the middle and advanced to second on a hit-by-pitch taken by Wielt but both runners were left stranded. In the bottom half, Adrian recorded a leadoff triple down the right field line. Following a groundout, Armbrust allowed a walk that put runners on the corners. With runners on the corners and one out, Adrian tied the game at 1-1 with an RBI single to right. Armbrust got out of the inning with a flyout and caught a runner stealing at home that kept the game tied. 

In the seventh, both teams did not score a run as Armbrust worked out of leadoff hit-by-pitch with two groundouts and a strikeout. In the eighth, both teams were sent down in order as Armbrust recorded two strikeouts and a groundout. 

In the top of the ninth, the Gorloks went down in order. In the bottom half, Armbrust allowed a leadoff walk which ended his outing. Webster then called upon Hunt out of the bullpen as he got an out on a sacrifice bunt back to himself. With a runner on second and one out, Webster intentionally walked the next batter that put two runners on base. With one out, the Gorloks made the out at second base but an error by Webster allowed Adrian to score that ended the game.

For the game, Armbrust pitched eight complete innings, recorded seven strikeouts, and allowed one run. Hunt pitched the final two-thirds innings and allowed a walk. Wielt went 1-for-3 with an RBI while Theodore had two hits.
