EUREKA, Ill. – The Webster University volleyball team was back on the court this afternoon when they traveled to Eureka College for a SLIAC matchup. The Gorloks were able to sweep the Red Devils in three straight sets (25-22, 25-12, 25-19) to improve to 6-6 on the season and 3-0 in conference play. With the loss, Eureka falls to 7-7 on the year and 1-1 in conference play.
Webster finished the match with 47 kills on 109 attacks for a .330 attacking percentage. They added nine service aces, six blocks, 46 assists, and 48 digs. The Red Devils finished with 22 kills on 96 attacks for a .063 attacking percentage.
The Gorloks got off to a strong start in the first set as they jumped out to an early 4-0 lead. Webster continued to build its advantage and held a 20-14 lead late in the set. Eureka battled back and cut the deficit to 24-22, but the Gorloks were able to close out the set on a kill from Carley Hersberger to take a 1-0 lead in the match.
Webster carried over their momentum into the second set and jumped out to a 6-0 advantage. The Gorloks continued to control the set and pushed their lead to 20-6 midway through the frame. Webster finished strong down the stretch and closed out the set, 25-12, to take a 2-0 lead in the match.
In the third set, Webster once again got off to a fast start as they took an 8-1 lead. Eureka battled back and cut the lead to 15-9, but the Gorloks continued to hold the advantage. Webster pushed its lead to 24-18 late in the set before finishing off the Red Devils, 25-19, to secure the sweep.
Leah McGrath led the attack for Webster as she finished with a team-high 11 kills on 25 attacks for a .400 attacking percentage. Reagan Howe added eight kills on 17 attacks for a .412 attacking percentage, while Karen Lewis recorded six kills without committing an attack error. Mea Bystrom also added six kills.
Emma Price and Shalamar Szarka ran the offense for Webster as Price recorded a team-high 21 assists while Szarka added nine. Lilly Bott contributed six assists and three service aces.
Lexi Filkins led the way defensively for the Gorloks as she finished with a team-high 14 digs. Price added 11 digs, while Webster finished with 48 digs as a team.
The Gorloks are back in action on Tuesday, September 29th when they return home to Grant Gymnasium to take on Westminster College for a SLIAC matchup. The game is set to start at 7 p.m.
