ST. LOUIS, Mo. — The Webster University men's soccer team battled back in the final minute Tuesday night, earning a 1-1 draw against the University of Wisconsin-Whitewater at Worldwide Technology Soccer Park.
Trailing 1-0 late in the second half, Webster was awarded a penalty kick with less than a minute remaining. Elmin Lemes stepped to the spot and converted, finding the back of the net to pull the Gorloks even with just 48 seconds remaining.
The late goal capped a strong second-half effort from Webster, which recorded seven shots after halftime and kept the pressure on the Warhawks throughout the final 45 minutes.
Wisconsin-Whitewater opened the scoring in the 28th minute when Luke Konrad finished a chance to give the Warhawks a 1-0 advantage. Webster goalkeeper Jakub Samelko kept the Gorloks within striking distance, making three saves in the opening half.
Webster continued to apply pressure after halftime. Alberto Duque Gonzalez, Bashor Soufi, and Lemes each put shots on frame during the second half, but Wisconsin-Whitewater goalkeeper Austin Waite turned away each attempt.
The Gorloks finally broke through in the 90th minute when Lemes converted the penalty kick, securing Webster's second consecutive draw to open the season.
Webster finished the night with a 15-7 advantage in shots and put 10 shots on goal compared to four for Wisconsin-Whitewater. Lemes led the Gorloks with four shots and three shots on goal, while Duque Gonzalez and Soufi each recorded two shots. Samelko finished with three saves in goal.
With the draw, Webster moves to 0-0-2 on the season, while Wisconsin-Whitewater moves to 1-0-2. The Gorloks return to action Friday, September 11, hosting Rhodes College at 6 p.m. at World Wide Technology Soccer Park.
