Josh Sellmeyer - 2020-21

Josh Sellmeyer

After a standout four-year playing career at Webster University, Josh Sellmeyer is in his sixth season on the men’s soccer coaching staff and his second year as the program's associate head coach.

Sellmeyer, who primarily coaches the Gorloks’ defense, guided Webster to one of its finest seasons ever in 2017. Webster’s goals-against average was an outstanding 0.99, the fifth-best mark in program history. The Gorloks produced shutouts in 6 of their 10 games against conference opponents. Center-back Justin Schmidt was named the SLIAC Co-Defensive Player of the Year and second-team All-Region. Webster completed the season 12-4-4.

Sellmeyer played for the Gorloks from 2009-2012 and captained the team his final two seasons. He was named the 2012 SLIAC Player of the Year. He was also selected to the All-Central Region second team and the Scholar All-North/Central Region second team in 2012. That year, Sellmeyer anchored a defense that recorded 10 shutouts in 20 games en route to a SLIAC regular-season championship, SLIAC Tournament title and NCAA Division III Tournament appearance.

Sellmeyer was twice named to the All-Conference first team (2011, 2012) and twice helped the Gorloks win the SLIAC Tournament and qualify for the NCAA Division III Tournament (2009, 2012). He ranks fifth in Webster career history with 61 games started.

In addition to his four-year soccer career, Sellmeyer was a four-year member of the Webster men’s tennis team. He helped the program to its best-ever season in 2013, as the Gorloks went 19-3 and claimed their first outright SLIAC regular-season championship.

Sellmeyer has the highest winning percentage in both singles play (.914; 32-3 record) and doubles play (.750; 36-12 record) in Webster history. His 36 career doubles victories rank him third all-time, while his 32 career singles wins rank fourth all-time. He was selected to the All-Conference first team for singles in 2012 and 2013. For doubles, he was picked to the All-Conference first team in 2013 and the All-Conference second team in 2011.

Sellmeyer has coached tennis at multiple high schools and currently coaches the boys’ tennis team at Kirkwood High School. He has also coached boys’ tennis at Mehlville High School and De Smet Jesuit High School. He has coached girls’ tennis at Ursuline Academy.

In 2013, Sellmeyer received the Outstanding Male Student-Athlete Award as well as the Capstone Award for Leadership from Webster University. He was a finalist for the prestigious NCAA Jim McKay Scholarship Award his senior year.

Sellmeyer won several state and regional journalism awards during his collegiate career. He graduated from Webster in 2013 with a bachelor’s degree in journalism and a master’s degree in media communications. He has freelanced for “Glimpse” — Webster University’s alumni digital publication — since 2015.

Prior to attending Webster, Sellmeyer played soccer and tennis at Mehlville. He was voted as the boys’ soccer Team MVP his senior season and the Defensive Player of the Year his junior season. He was an All-Conference honoree in 2007 and 2008.
