The SLIAC soccer season has come to a close with both Webster University teams making it into postseason play. The men finished fourth overall and the women got second. The women will take to the field first, playing Maryville at home on Oct. 29 at 6:30p.m. The men will play on the following day, Oct. 30, against Fontbonne University at Gay Field in Clayton, MO at 1p.m. Both championship games will be held on Nov. 1 with time and location to be determined depending on the winners of the semi-final games.
The women head into the conference tournament to play Maryville, a team they defeated 3-2 in their prior meeting. They will rely on the offense of sophomore forward Christy Capkovic, who was in the top three in the SLIAC in a wide variety of statistics: first in shots (103), second in points (40), third in goals (15), and second in assists (10). They also have the steadfast defense of senior keeper Jessica Kozeny. She lead the SLIAC in almost every keeper category with a .28 Goals Against Average, a .892 save percentage, and 11 shutouts.
The men will have their hands full with Fontbonne University. Fontbonne finished the season as the best team in the SLIAC. In their two prior contests Fontbonne won both. The first was a double OT victory and the second was a tightly contested 3-2 win for the Griffins. Webster will have the dynamic duo of Kevin Fann and Mike Riti, who combined for 25 goals and 9 assists, to play in the forward positions. In the midfield, the Gorloks will have the reliable Andy Rudroff, who had 5 goals and 6 assists this season.
The men have gone 11-9 in SLIAC tournaments all time. The women have made the SLIAC tournament every year they have been in the league. Also, if the women win the tournament this year, it will be there 8th tournament victory in the history of the program, which would be the highest total in the conference.
