(Scottsdale, Ariz.) – The Webster Gorloks baseball squad dropped a pair of games to Presentation College (S.D.),
10-9 and the 13th ranked College of New Jersey,
8-6 on Sunday afternoon in Scottsdale, Ariz.
In the opener against Presentation (2-0), the Gorloks (
0-3) had a rally in the ninth inning which came up a run short with the go-ahead run on base but a grounder to short ended the contest. WU jumped on top in the first on a two run single by Andrew Fuiten, but the Saints came back with single runs in the second and third to tie the game at 2-2. PC took the lead in the bottom of the fourth courtesy of a throwing error by Nate Shelton on a potential inning ending double play ball which led to two runs. Webster cut into the lead with a run in the top of the sixth to make it 4-3, but again Presentation responded this time scoring four runs in the bottom of the inning to extend the lead to 8-3. The Gorloks continued clawing back in the seventh with a two run homer by Fuiten down the right field line to pull them within three and had a chance for more after Kyle Starnes doubled down the left field line but were unable to move him around. The Saints again responded with two more runs in the bottom of the seventh to push the lead back to five. WU refused to go away however storming back for three in the eighth with the big blow coming off the bat of Wes Hilliard with a two run double down the right field line and again had a chance to get closer but left a runner at third to end the inning. Greg Bade came on in relief in the bottom of the inning and set PC down in order to give Webster a chance in the ninth. The Gorloks had runners at first and second with two outs when David Umfleet drove a single through the left side of the infield to make it 10-9 but Hilliard’s grounder to short ended the contest.
John DuHadway went the first 3.1 innings allowing four runs, two earned, on four hits with six strikeouts against one walk but had four hits batsman to get the loss.
In the second game WU fell to the 13th ranked College of New Jersey Lions, 8-6. TCNJ scored two runs in the first and added two more in the second while Webster had a single tally in the opening frame on an unearned run falling behind 4-1 after three innings. The Lions added two more in the fourth and one in the sixth before the Gorloks started chipping away with a run in the seventh and four more in the eighth sandwiched between a single run by New Jersey in the top of the eighth, to get within 8-6 and had another runner in scoring position but were unable to get him home. WU brought the tying run to the plate in the ninth but Shelton struck out looking and Dakota Huey flied out to right ending the game.
Hilliard allowed seven runs on nine hits in six innings of work to pick up the loss. Umfleet, Fuiten and Shelton each had two hits for the Gorloks in the loss.
After a day off on Monday Webster will return to the diamond on Tuesday afternoon with a game against Wheaton (Mass.) at 1:30 p.m. (PST) in Chandler, Ariz.
