Softball splits final four games in Arizona

(St. Louis, Mo.) – The Webster Gorlok softball squad split its final four games in the Tucson Invitational Games defeating Calvin College 8-6 and Judson University 12-3 while losing to Kenyon College 12-4 and Dickinson University 6-3 last Wednesday and Thursday in Tucson, Ariz. Webster finished its trip to Arizona with a 6-2 mark to improve to 6-6 on the season.

    In its first game on Wednesday against Kenyon, WU (6-6) fell behind early 9-1 and were unable to overcome six errors in the loss to the Ladies (3-4). The Gorloks rapped out 10 hits in the loss led by Dana Vahey, Maria Hibbard and Gina Trapani with two apiece. Allie Park suffered the loss allowing seven runs, five earned, on five hits with three walks in just an inning of work.

    In the second game on Wednesday versus Calvin (2-5), Webster rallied from a 6-4 deficit in the bottom of the sixth inning thanks to a grand slam off the bat of Kelsey Washam to go ahead 8-6. Once again the Gorloks banged out 10 hits in the contest led by Washam going 3-for-3 with the four runs knocked home, Samantha Dittman had two hits with an RBI while Vahey added another home run and three RBIs. Megan Speery picked up the win in relief throwing the final four innings allowing only two earned runs on six hits with a strikeout and a walk improving to 3-1.

    Against Judson University (4-2) on Thursday Webster scored in every inning but the third breaking open a 3-3 game with three in the fourth and six in the fifth to pick up the win in the run rule shortened game. WU had 17 hits in the rout led by Mandy VanVelkingburg with four and Hibbard with three. Vahey, Sperry and Elizabeth Eisele had two hits apiece. Four players had at least two RBIs in the game led by Dittman with three and was joined by Washam, Sperry and VanVelkingburg. Trapani picked up the complete game win allowing three runs on seven hits with three K’s and a walk to improve to 3-1.

    In the final game against Dickinson (5-4) the Gorloks scored three runs in the top of the fourth to take a 3-1 lead but were unable to hold on as the Red Devils answered with three of its own in the bottom of the inning to retake the lead. Dickinson added two more in the sixth for the final margin. Sperry took the loss allowing six runs on 15 hits with a walk and three strikeouts to fall to 3-2. Dittman paced the offense with two of the team’s five hits while Allie Park hit a two run homer, her third of the season, in the defeat.

    Webster returns to action with a doubleheader against Westminster College on Wednesday afternoon in Fulton, Mo. beginning at 4 p.m.
