(St. Louis, Mo.) – The Webster Gorloks scored seven straight runs in the top of the ninth inning breaking a 4-4 tie to defeat the Washington University Bears
11-4 at Kelly Field on Thursday afternoon. The win over the Bears was the first for Webster since April 27, 2004.
The Gorloks (
2-8) fell behind 1-0 on an unearned run in the first inning before answering back with two in the third and two more in the fourth taking a 4-1 advantage. Washington (4-5) clawed back scoring single runs in the fourth, fifth and sixth innings to tie the game at 4-4. The Bears had a golden opportunity to take the lead in the bottom of the eighth with a runner at third and no one out but Brett Mueller worked out of the jam getting a pair of strikeouts and a pick off at third to end the threat. Webster sent 11 men to the plate in the ninth starting its rally with a one out hit batsmen then proceeded to rip off four consecutive singles highlighted by a two run single off the bat of John Combs to left field. Wes Hilliard added another RBI single then with the bases loaded Dave Umfleet was hit by a pitch scoring Combs. Andrew Fuiten gave the Gorloks a six run cushion with another two run single before Greg Steen ended the scoring with a ground out to short. Webster took advantage of five hits and three hit batsmen in the frame.
Mueller earned his second win of the season in relief of starter Eric McKinley allowing just four hits with two strikeouts in 3.2 innings of work. McKinley was once again effective for the Gorloks allowing only two earned runs in 5.1 innings on seven hits with three K’s and two walks.
Combs and Dakota Huey had two hits apiece to lead the offense. Every starter but one had a hit in the contest. Combs drove in three runs while Umfleet and Fuiten knocked in two each. Huey and Combs each scored a pair of runs as well.
Webster returns to action next Tuesday evening at conference rival Fontbonne beginning at 7 p.m.
