Webster rallies late to earn doubleheader sweep of Fontbonne

(St. Louis, Mo.) – The Webster Gorloks rallied with two runs in the sixth to tie the game then won it in extra innings on Dakota Huey’s single to left field scoring Andrew Fuiten to pick up a doubleheader sweep of Fontbonne 12-3 and 9-8 on Tuesday evening at GCS Ballpark in Sauget, Ill. With the wins Webster has now won four straight and five of its last six overall.

    The Gorloks (5-8, 3-0 SLIAC) got off to hot start in the second game scoring five runs on three home runs from the first five batters in the bottom of the first for a 5-1 advantage. The Griffins (5-8, 3-3 SLIAC) scored twice in the second then took advantage of two Webster errors in the third scoring five times to take an 8-5 lead. WU got one of those runs back in the home half of the third and had a chance for more but left the bases loaded ending the threat. They tied the game with two outs in the sixth on a RBI single by Fuiten and a triple by Kyle Starnes that hit off the top of the center field wall narrowly missing a home run but left him stranded their ending the inning. Webster had an opportunity to win it in the seventh but stranded two more runners at first and second before winning it in the eighth inning.

    Fuiten started things off with a one out single then moved to second on a balk and scored when Huey lined the first pitch through the left side and Fuiten slid in just ahead of the left fielder’s to win the game. Wes Hilliard went the final four innings allowing no runs on three hits with three strikeouts and a walk to improve to 1-1. Fuiten and Alex Raetzloff each had three hits in the contest to lead the offense.

    In the first game of the day the Gorloks got single runs in the second and third inning to take a 2-0 lead. Fontbonne came back with two solo home runs in the fourth to the game at 2-2, but Webster regained the lead at 3-2 on Fuiten’s solo homer down the right field line in the bottom of the inning. The Griffins tied the game on an unearned run in the fifth but WU sent 11 men to the plate in the bottom of the inning scoring five times to take an 8-3 lead before sealing it with four more in the sixth. Fuiten led the charge with two home runs and and a double in the contest finishing with five RBIs. Raetzloff and Greg Steen also had three hits in the game.

    Eric McKinley went the first six innings allowing three runs, two earned, on only two hits with six K’s and a pair of a walks raising his record to 1-2 on the year.

    Webster returns to action this Friday evening in a single nine inning non-conference game against Lincoln Christian beginning at 5 p.m. at GCS Ballpark in Sauget, Ill.
