(Fulton, Mo.) – The Webster Gorloks softball squad continued its winning ways with a doubleheader sweep against Westminster
10-2 and
7-3 last Thursday afternoon in Fulton, Mo. With the wins Webster has won eight of its last 10 contests.
In the opener the Gorloks (
8-6) took control early and never looked back scoring six times in the first inning highlighted by Kelsey Washam’s two run homer. The Blue Jays (0-12) got one of those runs back in the bottom of the frame but WU quickly responded with another run in the second. After a scoreless third each team added a run in the fourth and then Webster put the game away with two in the fifth to enforce the spread rule. Five Gorloks had two hits in the contest while Washam had four RBIs and Allie Park scored three runs. Megan Sperry picked up her fourth win of the season allowing two runs on five hits with a walk and two strikeouts in four innings of work.
In the nightcap WU raced out to a 4-0 lead after two and a half innings but Westminster scored three times in its half of the third to get within one. The Gorloks added an insurance run in the fourth on a Park double that plated Maria Hibbard and then sealed the victory with a pair of runs in the sixth taking a 7-3 advantage. Webster again had a balanced offensive effort spreading out 11 of its 13 hits among five players led by Hibbard with three. Park and Samantha Dittman had two runs batted in apiece. Gina Trapani picked up the complete game victory giving up three runs on five hits with six strikeouts against six walks to improve to 4-1 on the season.
WU returns to action on Wednesday afternoon for a doubleheader at Greenville College beginning at 4 p.m.
