(St. Louis, Mo.) - The Webster Gorloks won its sixth straight game with a doubleheader sweep of Westminster
7-3 and
8-3 on Tuesday evening at GCS Ballpark in Sauget, Ill. With the wins Webster has now won 16 of its last 19 games.
In the opener the Gorloks (
16-10, 12-2 SLIAC) jumped on top with a run in the first inning on an RBI double from
Andrew Fuiten scoring
Alex Raetzloff from second. They added two more in the second and third innings to stretch the lead to 5-0. The Blue Jays (18-9, 13-6 SLIAC) got two of those runs back in the top of the fourth and had a chance to tie the game with the bases loaded but
John DuHadway got a ground ball to second ending the inning. Westminster cut into the lead some more in the fifth with a two out walk and double to make it 5-3. WU got a couple of insurance runs in the sixth thanks to a throwing error and an RBI single from Fuiten to push the lead back to 7-3.
Greg Bade held the WC bats in check the final 2.1 innings not allowing a runner to reach base to pick up his third save of the season and make a winner of DuHadway who improved to 2-2 allowing three runs, two earned, on five hits with six punch outs four walks in 4.2 innings.
In the nightcap the Gorloks fell behind 2-0 in the first on a two run double from Mike Silver. Webster tied the game in the bottom of the inning on a two run triple off the bat of
Dakota Huey and then took the lead when
Craig Schaefer singled in Huey one batter later. The Blue Jays took advantage of four walks by WU pitching in the third to tie the game at 3-3 and still had the bases loaded with one out but
Joe Malat got Grant Shell to line into a double play to end the inning. The Gorloks retook the lead in the bottom of the inning courtesy of a sacrifice fly from
Kyle Starnes and an attempted double steal which brought home Huey from third as Schaefer was caught stealing to end the inning. Webster added three more runs in the fourth on a balk and RBI doubles from Fuiten and
Greg Steen.
Mike Satore pitched the final four innings allowing a single and a walk to earn his first win of the season. WU's pitching in game two allowed only two hits but walked seven hitters in the contest.
Next action for the Gorloks will be on Thursday night when they host Millikin University in a non-conference doubleheader at GCS Ballpark in Sauget, Ill., starting at 5 p.m.
