Baseball splits with Millikin

(Sauget, Ill.) - The Webster Gorloks split a non-conference doubleheader with Millikin University losing game one 5-4 then winning game two 15-4 on Thursday evening at GCS Ballpark in Sauget, Ill.

In game one the Gorloks (17-11) fell behind 1-0 in the second inning but tied it up in the home half of the inning on a squeeze play with John Combs getting the bunt down and Dakota Huey coming in from third. Millikin (11-12) regained the lead 3-1 in the third inning scoring two runs on a pair of singles, a fielder's choice and an error. WU got one of those runs back in the third on an Alex Raetzloff solo home run, his sixth, to right and then tied it at 3-3 in the fourth on Grant Bellak's RBI single back up the middle plating Huey with his second run of the game.

The Big Blue came right back with a run in the fifth but Webster matched that run with one of its own in the home part of the frame and had a chance to take the lead but stranded runners at first and second to end the inning. Millikin scored the eventual game winner in the sixth on an RBI groundout that deflected to the second baseman off the pitcher's glove. WU again had its chances to tie or even win the game in the sixth and seventh innings getting the winning run on base but couldn't move him around.

Will Savage took the loss allowing just one run on four hits in three innings of work to fall to 0-1. Huey and Bellak led the offense with two hits apiece.

In the nightcap the Gorloks fell behind 2-0 in the first but from that point it was all Webster scoring nine runs while sending 19 men to the plate in the first two innings. It scored in every inning but the fourth adding a run in the third, four in the fifth and one in the sixth to build a 15-2 lead. The Big Blue added two runs in the seventh for the final margin.

Eight starters had at least one hit for the Gorloks led by Huey who went 3-for-3 with two runs scored and three runs brought home. Raetzloff added his second home run of the night and his seventh of the season.

After a rocky start allowing the two runs in the opening frame James Powell settled down allowing only four singles over the next five innings while striking out four to improve to 2-1 on the year.

Webster will be back in action on Saturday afternoon in a single nine inning game at MacMurray College in Jacksonville, Ill. beginning at 1 p.m.
