(Sauget, Ill.) - The Webster Gorloks scored five times in the bottom of the sixth inning to rally from a 2-0 deficit in game two to get a doubleheader sweep of MacMurray on Sunday evening at GCS Ballpark. They won game won
14-1 then held on for a
5-3 win in the nightcap.
In the opener the Gorloks (
19-11, 14-2 SLIAC) got off to a shaky start with a couple of errors by the defense in the opening frame which allowed the Highlanders (5-19, 2-14 SLIAC) to load the bases with one out. They caught a big break when a ball hit up the middle looked to go through but hit the runner at second for an out and left the bases loaded.
Eric McKinley got out of the jam though with a strikeout to end the inning.
The offense got rolling in the second inning scoring five times started by
John Combs third home run of the season, a two run shot to right center, After
Grant Bellak reached on an error and stole second
Nathan Shelton drove him in with a single to left. Webster continued its damage with two outs loading the bases and then
Greg Steen drove in two more runs with a double down the right field line to make it 5-0. They got another run in the third inning when Bellak singled home
Kyle Starnes from second.
MacMurray got one of those runs back in the fifth but WU answered right back with four in its half of the fifth and then added four more in the sixth for the final margin.
McKinley got the win allowing no runs on two hits with a walk and three Ks in just four innings of work.
Mike Satore, Will Savage and
Greg Bade combined to go the final three innings allowing a run on three hits.
In the nightcap the Highlanders jumped on top with two runs in the second inning on a dropped fly ball by the left fielder and then back-to-back singles and a sacrifice fly for its runs. The offense struggled to get on track in the first three innings getting only a bunt single from
Dakota Huey in the second but was erased on a double play ending the inning.
The Gorloks defense turned a couple of unconventional double play of its own in the third inning on a fly ball to right then doubled off the runner at first ending the inning and another one in the sixth on a foul out down the left field line then
Andrew Fuiten fired it into Steen who tagged out the runner trying to advance from second ending the inning.
The offense got going in the fifth loading the bases with one out and scored its first run on a walk to Huey to cut the lead to 2-1. After a pitching change Bellak came off the bench and on a 1-0 pitch hit a ground rule double to right center making it 3-2. Combs kept the rally going beating out a bunt to the pitcher bringing in Huey then scored the final run on a sacrifice fly to left field off the bat of Starnes for a 5-2 advantage.
MacMurray made things interesting in the seventh bringing the go ahead run to the plate with two outs and a run in but
Wes Hilliard slammed the door shut getting Jordan Missey to pop out to second base ending the game.
Hilliard went the distance for the Gorloks allowing three runs, two earned, on five hits with five punchouts against two walks improving to 4-1 on the season.
Webster concludes its three game series with MacMurray with a single nine inning game this afternoon in Jacksonville, Ill. beginning at 3 p.m.
