Softball hangs on for DH sweep of Fontbonne

(Webster Groves, Mo.) - The Webster Gorloks hung on for a conference doubleheader sweep of Fontbonne 2-1 and 6-5 on Sunday afternoon at Blackburn Park in Webster Groves. Webster has now won nine in a row.

The Gorloks (18-10, 9-1 SLIAC) got great pitching in game one from Megan Sperry tossing a complete game six hitter allowing a lone run with four Ks and no walks on just 68 pitches winning her fourth straight outing and improving to 9-4 on the year.

The offense got on the board in the second inning with a lead off single to the catcher by Sam Dittman and she moved to second on a ground out to the catcher. She then scored on Erynn Coit's double to left center with two down for a 1-0 lead. The Griffins (6-14, 4-2 SLIAC) tied it in the third on a seeing eye single through the left side scoring the runner from second.

The Gorloks regained the lead in their half of the third thanks to a pair of walks then Allie Park drove in the game winner with a sacrifice bunt scoring Dana Vahey from third. Park would reach on the play when the second baseman dropped the throw covering first. They had an opportunity for more damage with runners at second and third but a strikeout and a ground out to the pitcher ended the threat.

Fontbonne had the chance to tie the game and possibly take the lead in its half of the fourth with a runners at second and third and one down but a ground out and a fly out ended the inning with no runs scored. From that point it was all Sperry retiring eight of the final nine hitters she faced allowing just a two out single in the fifth and that runner was gunned down at second when she tried to stretch a single into a double by Nancy LaRose.

In game two Webster got the early lead scoring twice in the first inning thanks to a three base error by the right fielder plating the first run and a RBI single from Park for the second one. The offense plated four more in the sixth inning with the big blow being Kelsey Washam's ninth home run of the season a two run blast to center making it 6-0.

The Griffins scored once in the fifth and then put together a rally in the bottom of the seventh scoring four times and had the winning run at first base with two outs. They nearly pulled of the comeback when a ball down the left field line landed just foul which would have tied the game but Gina Trapani struck the hitter out two pitches later securing the victory.

Trapani picked up the win allowing one run on six hits with six punchouts and three walks in 5.1 innings of work to win her fifth in a row and improve to 9-2 on the season.

The Gorloks return to action on Wednesday afternoon hosting Blackburn College in a conference doubleheader at Blackburn Park starting at 4 p.m.
