Softball drops two at Maryville on Saturday

(St. Louis, Mo.) - The Webster Gorloks dropped two games at Maryville University on Saturday losing to Maryville 4-1 in the morning then lost to Washington-St. Louis 16-8 in the afternoon. With the loss to the Saints, Webster and MU will share the regular season conference title.

In the opener WU (20-13, 11-3 SLIAC) fell behind 2-0 in the second inning on a fielding error by the defense a double and a bunt single. The Saints (23-14, 11-3 SLIAC) added another run in the third to push the lead to 3-0. After being held hitless through the first three innings Kelsey Washam put the Gorloks on the board with her 11th HR of the year to make it 3-1.

Maryville added another run in the sixth to push the lead back to 4-1, but Webster refused to go quietly bringing the tying run to the plate in the home half of the sixth but Mandy VanVelkingburgh was robbed of at least a two run double on a great catch by the right fielder ending the inning. They had another chance in the seventh with Maria Hibbard representing the tying run but she grounded out to second with runners at second and third to end the game.

Megan Sperry dropped her second straight decision allowing all four runs, two earned, on seven hits with a walk and a strikeout to fall to 10-6. Washam and LaRose had WU's only two hits of the contest.

In game two against Wash U (23-10) the Gorloks fell behind 3-0 before scoring five runs highlighted by a Washam grand slam to make it 5-3 after three innings. They added three more in the fourth to push the lead to five but the Bears came right back with eight in the fifth to regain the lead then added three in the sixth and two in the seventh for the final margin.

Lexie Moore suffered the loss for Webster allowing eight runs, four earned, over the final 2.2 innings to fall to 0-4 on the year.

The Gorloks are scheduled to play a doubleheader on Sunday afternoon at Illinois Wesleyan beginning at 1 p.m.
