Webster Baseball wins 2008 SLIAC Regular Season title with 16-3 win over Maryville

(Sauget, Ill.) – The Webster Gorloks won the 2008 SLIAC regular season championship with a 16-3 win over the Maryville Saints at GCS Ballpark in Sauget, Ill. on Sunday evening. Webster won its second straight regular season crown and will be the top seed at the conference tournament in two weeks.

The Gorloks (23-12, 18-3 SLIAC) fell behind 2-0 in the first inning with a lead off double, a pair of singles, a walk and a hit by pitch. WU had a chance to get one of those runs back in the bottom of the inning but Andrew Fuiten was thrown at the plate trying to score from second on a single to right by Greg Steen. They would gain the lead though in the third inning sending 14 men to the plate and scoring nine times on eight hits to take control of the game.

The Gorlok train kept rolling with a run in the fourth then getting two more in the fifth when Fuiten hit his 10th home run of the year, setting a new school record, to right field to make it 12-2. Webster continued the run parade with four more on six hits in the sixth inning to give them a comfortable margin.

The Saints (19-16, 15-8) got its final run with two outs in the seventh on a single to right plating Adam Boyer.

Every Gorlok starter had at least one hit in the win led by five guys with three apiece as they pounded out 21 hits in the win.

After a rocky first inning Brett Mueller settled down allowing a run on four hits over the final six innings to improve to 6-0 on the year and tossed his second complete game.

WU returns to action with a non conference doubleheader on Tuesday afternoon against Illinois College starting at 12 noon at GCS Ballpark in Sauget, Ill.
