(St. Louis, Mo.) - The Webster Gorloks took two of three against the Eureka Red Devils this past weekend. They lost
10-7 at Eureka on Saturday afternoon then swept a doubleheader
3-2 and
8-2 on Sunday afternoon at GCS Ballpark in Sauget, Ill. With the wins Webster gets back to the break even mark for the first time this season.
In the opener on Saturday the Gorloks (
9-9, 5-1 SLIAC) fell behind 3-0 after the first inning before getting a run in the third and three more in the fourth to tie the game at 4-4. The Red Devils (7-13, 7-5 SLIAC) would answer with two in the fifth and another in the sixth to regain its three run cushion. WU got one of those runs back in the eighth when
David Umfleet singled to left center plating
Grant Bellak. Webster had the opportunity to get closer or even take the lead but
Andrew Fuiten grounded into an inning ending double play to end the threat. Eureka added three insurance runs in the bottom of the inning, bur WU refused to go away scoring two in the ninth and had the bases loaded with two outs before Umfleet fouled out to third to end the game.
Joe Malat took the loss allowing seven runs on 10 hits with four strikeouts and no walks to fall to 0-1 on the year.
Alex Raetzloff had three hits and a pair of RBIs to pace the offense.
On Sunday the Gorloks got only one hit but were able to take advantage of five Red Devil walks to even the series up with the 3-2 win. They got their first run by playing small ball in the first frame with a walk, a single a couple of stolen bases and a groundout. Webster picked up two more runs in the second after the first two were retired with an error, a hit by pitch then three straight walks to push the lead to 3-0. EC scored single runs in the fourth and fifth to close the gap to one but
Wes Hilliard retired eight of the final nine hitters he faced to get the complete game win and improve to 2-1. Umfleet had the lone hit for WU in the contest.
In the nightcap Webster fell behind 2-0 after the top of the second before tying the game in the bottom of the inning on a two run homer by
Greg Steen over the right field wall then took the lead in the third with three unearned runs on four hits for a 5-2 advantage. The lead grow to 7-2 with a pair of runs in the fourth on a two out two run single to right field off the bat of
Kyle Starnes. That would be all the offense the Gorloks needed as
Eric Broughton and
John DuHadway worked the final six innings allowing just two runners to get to third base sealing the win.
Broughton improved to 2-1 on the year while DuHadway picked up the save. Eight players recorded at least a hit in the contest with four players getting two apiece.
