Baseball holds off Greenville 10-7, take series 2-1

(St. Louis, Mo.) - The Webster Gorloks survived a late rally in the final innings to hold off Greenville 10-7 on Wednesday afternoon at GCS Ballpark in Sauget, Ill. Webster went on to take two-of-three in the series after the two sides split a doubleheader on Monday in Greenville with WU winning game one 23-4 and GC winning the second one 2-0.
In the opener on Monday the Gorloks (11-10, 7-2 SLIAC) pounded out 25 hits and hit six home runs including three two run blasts in an 11 run second inning to cruise to the victory. 14 guys recorded a hit in the game and eight players had at least two hits led by John Combs, Dakota Huey and Greg Steen had three apiece. Alex Raetzloff and Andrew Fuiten each hit two home runs in the game. Webster scored in every inning but the seventh and had a runner on base in every inning.
Brett Mueller got the win allowing three runs, two earned, on five hits with three walks and three K's in five innings to improve to 4-0. Craig Brodbeck and Logan Johnson threw an inning each allowing a run on one hit with a pair of walks and four punch outs.
In the nightcap on Monday it was a classic pitcher's dual as WU's Eric McKinley and the Panthers (8-13, 4-7 SLIAC) Justin Litteken matched each other pitch for pitch but it was Litteken coming out on top as he had a perfect game going until one out in the seventh before giving up back-to-back singles to Dave Umfleet and Fuiten. Webster brought the potential go ahead run to the plate but Litteken got a strikeout and a pop out to end the game. McKinley pitched just as well allowing only two runs, one earned, on three hits with nine strikeouts but allowed five free passes falling to 1-3 on the year.
In the finale on Wednesday Greenville jumped on top in the first inning after the first two were retired with a single and a double to right center to go up 1-0. The Gorloks got that run back in the home half of the second with a two out rally of its own getting a double from Steen and then went to third on a fielding error by the first baseman allowing Wes Hilliard to reach. They would pull off a double steal to tie the score and Hilliard advanced to third when the second baseman's throw to the plate was off line. Webster scored six times in the third behind a pair of two run homers off the bats of Raetzloff and Fuiten to go up 7-1. Fuiten's homer was his ninth of the season tying the school's single season home run record.
The two sides traded runs over the next three innings with Greenville scoring in the fifth and WU answering in the sixth. Each side scored twice in the seventh. The Panthers continued to claw back with a run in the eighth and two more in the ninth and had the tying run at the plate before Greg Bade slammed the door shut with a ground ball to first and a strikeout swinging to end the game.
John DuHadway earned his first win of the season allowing two runs on six hits with eight Ks against two walks.
The Gorloks are scheduled to return to action on Thursday afternoon at Washington-St. Louis with the first pitch scheduled for 2 p.m.
