(St. Ann, Mo.) - The Webster Gorloks went 1-1 on Thursday in the SLIAC Tournament defeating Greenville
6-0 in the opener before falling to Maryville
6-5 in eight innings in a winners bracket game at ABC Ball Park in St. Ann, Mo.
In its first round game WU (
21-16) got off to a good start getting back-to-back singles from
Dana Vahey and
Maria Hibbard to start the game then
Kelsey Washam hit a 2-2 pitch to straight away center field for her school record tying 13th round tripper to make it 3-0 with nobody out in the first. The Gorloks got out off a tough situation in the second inning with runners at first and second and no one out but two ground outs and a strike out ended the frame with no damage.
Both sides were unable to score over the next three innings before Webster added some insurance runs with three in its half of the fifth courtesy of a two run single from
Allie Park with one out and a RBI groundout to third from
Mandy VanVelkingburgh to make it 6-0.
That was all the run support
Megan Sperry needed tossing a complete game five hit shutout with a walk and seven strikeouts to improve to 11-7 on the year.
Hibbard and Washam each had two hits and two runs to pace the Gorlok offense.
In the semifinal contest against the Saints (26-15), Webster scored first in the third inning when Washam raced home from third on a wild pitch to make it 1-0. Maryville answered back though in the fourth inning getting a two run home run from Jaye O'Dell and an RBI double from Molly Duffy to make it 3-1. WU came right back in the fifth to tie the game when Washam hit her record breaking 14th HR, a two run shot, to left center.
The Saints retook the lead though in the home half of the fifth on a RBI single from Katie Brockmeyer to make it 4-3. The Gorloks again had the answer in the sixth with the bases loaded and one out Washam hit a sac fly to right and
Autumn Sensing scored from third to tie it back up. They had the chance to take the lead with runners at second and third and two away on a wild pitch to the screen but Hibbard got caught in a rundown between second and third ending the inning.
Webster retook the lead in the seventh with one out Park hit a ground rule double down the left field and advanced to third on a foul to the left fielder.
Nancy LaRose then singled to the shortstop bringing in Park with the go ahead run. After a lead off single in the bottom of the seventh to the pitcher. Vahey gunned down the runner at second trying to steal then got a ground out to second for the first two outs. After a walk to the third hitter Brockmeyer hit a fly ball to right center that just eluded Hibbard's glove and then Brockmeyer slid around the tag at second which allowed the tying run to score and send the game into extra innings.
The Gorloks had a chance in the top of the eighth to take the lead with a runner at third with one out but Vahey grounded out to the pitcher and Hibbard struck out ending the threat. Maryville won the game in the bottom of the inning with runners at second and third and one out a ground ball back to Sperry went through her legs allowing the winning run to score.
Washam, Park and Sensing each had two hits in the loss to pace the offense with 11 in the contest. Sperry took the loss allowing two runs, one earned, on five hits with a walk and two K's to fall to 11-8
Webster will now have to come back through the loser's bracket with that journey coming tomorrow evening against Blackburn at ABC Ball Park in St. Ann starting at 5 p.m.
