(Moline, Ill.) – With eight outs to play and down 7-2 the Webster Gorloks were on the verge of its season ending before rallying with seven runs in the home half of the seventh to take a
9-7 lead and hold on for the win over Wisconsin-Stevens Point on Friday afternoon at Swanson Stadium in Moline, Ill.
After Stevens Point (29-16) put up three spots in the sixth and seventh innings to stretch the lead to five. WU (
30-14) got things going with a one out single from
Kyle Starnes and a double off the bat of
John Combs. After the Pointers made a pitching change
Nathan Shelton kept the rally going with a two run double down the left field line to make it 7-4.
Alex Raetzloff kept the inning going with a single to third and then
Dave Umfleet singled to left loading the bases with one out. After another UWSP pitching change and a strikeout
Greg Steen got hit by a pitch down in the count 0-2 to score Shelton.
Dakota Huey tied the game with a bloop double down the left field line on another 0-2 pitch then
Craig Schaefer singled off the shortstop’s glove to score Steen and Huey to give WU its first lead since it was 1-0 after four.
After entering the game with one out in the seventh
Will Savage pitched out of a jam getting the final two outs in the seventh then pitched a scoreless eighth to earn his first victory of the season.
Brett Mueller came on to pitch a scoreless ninth and notch his first save of the year.
The Gorloks pounded out 10 hits in the contest, with seven of those coming in the seventh, Raetzloff and Huey each had two hits in the contest while Steen, Huey, Schaefer and Shelton drove in two runs apiece.
Webster will play the host Augustana College this evening at 7 p.m. at Swanson Stadium. Should WU win that game it would play for the regional championship at 3:30 on Saturday afternoon.
