The Webster University men's soccer team defeated Fontbonne University, 3-1, in the first round of the St. Louis Intercollegiate Athletic Conference tournament on November 4 at the Soccer Park. Webster advances to the championship versus Greenville College (IL).
Fontbonne took a short-lived lead at the 13:00 mark as senior Andy Rudroff (DeSmet Jesuit HS, STL) tied the game with his ninth goal of the season two minutes later. Senior Mike Riti (Webster Groves HS, STL) scored the game winner at 21:00 on a head ball off a Mike Politte (JR, St. Francis Borgia, STL) pass. It was Riti's fifth goal.
Kyle Leifield (JR, Marquette HS, STL) scored his sixth goal to complete the scoring at 52:00 of the second half. The threesome of Rudroff, Riti, and Leifield led Webster in scoring during the regular season and continues to pace the Gorlok offense in the post-season.
The was Webster's second win over Fontbonne this season after going 0-3 versus them in 2008 and being eliminated by them in the first round of last year's tournament. Webster is now 9-6-1 for the season.
Webster faces Greenville in the championship at 12 p.m., on November 7, at Greenville, IL. A win would give the Gorloks their first NCAA tournament appearance since 2005.
