Ninth-inning Rally Falls Short

(BOX SCORE)

AUBURNDALE, FL - The opportunity presented itself with the team's hottest hitter at the plate and the tying run a mere 90 feet away with two runs already home. However, the big hit didn't come for Webster as they Gorloks fell to No. 15 SUNY Cortland Tuesday, 6-5.

Senior John Combs started the rally with a leadoff single. One-out walks by junior Zach Little and Alex Raetzloff loaded the bases for Webster. Senior Dakota Huey brought home the first run with a fielder's choice groundout, then sophomore Paul Kienker singled home the next. Huey's single moved Huey to third, where he stayed as sophomore Craig Schaefer made the final out.

It was a bittersweet ending for Schaefer, who had already tied a career-high with three hits on the game. He finished the day 3-for-5 with two RBI and a run scored.

It would have been the second time in the game Webster came back from a deficit. The Gorloks scored twice in the bottom of the first inning after the Red Dragons claimed the early lead with a run in the top half of the frame.

Raetzloff led the inning off with a double, then scored on Schaefer's two-out single. After swiping second and moving to third on a passed ball, Schaefer scored on Fuiten's double. Schaefer doubled home Raetzloff in the third as the Gorloks played a little add-on.

But, the Red Dragons sandwiched singles runs in the fourth and sixth innings around a three-run fifth to take the 6-3 advantage.

Raetzloff was on base all five times, going 2-for-2 with two runs scored and three walks, while Combs added a 2-for-4 performance for the Gorloks.

Senior Eric Broughton (1-1) took the loss, surrendering six runs (five earned) on 13 hits over nine innings with six strikeouts.
