WINTER HAVEN, FL - Three ninth-inning errors came back to haunt Webster Thursday. Transylvania turned those miscues into four runs, three unearned, as the Pioneers kept WU on its early season skid handing the Gorloks an 11-7 defeat. Transy scored all 11 of its runs in the final four innings.
The disheartening aspect of the ninth inning explosion is that it came directly off the heels of an three-run eighth which allowed Webster to knot the game at seven. Senior
Dakota Huey had the big blow in the inning with a two-out, two-run single that scored
Nathan Shelton and
Zach Little. An unearned run in the seventh helped put WU in the position to climb back in the game.
Webster claimed the lead with two runs in the bottom half of the first as Huey reached on an error that allowed
Alex Raetzloff, who led the inning off with a double, to score. Huey eventually plated the team's second run on a ground out by
Craig Schaefer.
WU hurler
Peter Quintus was cruising along through five innings, but was finally touched up for a run in the sixth inning. It was his final inning of work, and before he turned the game over to the bullpen, the Gorloks added a run in their half of the sixth.
Schaefer drove a one-out double to right center and moved to third on an error.
Aaron Senzell brought him home with a sacrifice fly.
The wheels fell off for Webster in the seventh as reliever
John DuHadway yielded six earned runs on five hits in one-third of an inning.
Barrett Dugger helped the Gorloks avoid anymore damage by striking out the two batters he faced.
Dugger (0-1) took the loss, allowing three runs (one earned) in two innings of work with five strikeouts.
Webster (2-6) return to the diamond for the Central States Trailways Classic Saturday and Sunday at GCS Ballpark.
