Gorloks fall to Concordia

(BOX SCORE)

SAUGET, IL - Webster got the most of their five hits, but Concordia scored in seven of the nine innings as the Gorloks fell 13-7 to CU in the final game of the 2009 Central States Trailways Classic Sunday at GCS Ballpark.

Concordia pieced together two singles in each of the first two innings for single runs in each frame.

Sophomore Paul Kienker helped manufacture a run in the third. After reaching on an error, he stole second and third before scoring on a groundout.

Each took advantage of errors in the fourth as all five runs scored in the inning were unearned, two for Concordia and three for Webster.

Junior Dakota Huey drew a two-out walk to start the rally. He advanced to second on errant pick-off attempt, and then scored on a single by Andrew Fuiten. With the count at 3-1, Kienker was intentionally walked. A throwing error by the pitcher on a slow roller scored both runners to tie the game at four.

The Cougars utilized a walk and two throwing errors to take a short-lived lead as the Gorloks responded with two in the fifth.

Sophomore Craig Schaefer doubled home a run, then Kienker reached on a bases loaded fielder’s choice to score the go-ahead run.

A four-spot by the Cougars gave the visitors breathing room and they eased to the victory.

Senior Eric Broughton (1-2) allowed nine runs (six earned) in five innings of work.

Webster (3-8) will host Westminster 7 p.m. Friday at GCS Ballpark in the opener of its St. Louis Intercollegiate Athletic Conference three-game series that will conclude Saturday with a doubleheader in Fulton. It will mark the SLIAC opener for the Gorloks.
