The good news for the Webster softball team is they haven't been swept in a doubleheader yet this season. However, they haven't been able to record the double yet this season. The trend continued Thursday as Webster split its non-conference doubleheader with SLIAC-foe Fontbonne at ABC Ballpark.
Two big innings, a three-run first and a four-run fifth, provided more than enough offense in the Gorloks' 8-3 victory. Fontbonne used early offense, scoring four run in the first three innings to post the 4-2 victory.
Webster immediately put FU in a jam as the first inning started with a single and consecutive walks. The Griffins were almost able to wiggle away with minimal damage, but a two-run error enabled three runs to eventually cross the plate.
Senior
Kelsey Washam started the fifth inning off with her team-leading third home run of the season. The blast opened the flood gates, and three more Gorloks would cross the plate before the inning completed.
Senior
Mandy Van Velkinburgh led the way with three RBI. Senior
Gina Trapani (3-3) earned the victory, allowing three runs (two earned) on three hits with six strikeouts.
The Gorloks took advantage of two errors to tally individual runs in the second and fourth innings. Sophomore
Erynn Coit had the only RBI for the Gorloks.
Junior
Lexie Moore (0-4) was saddled with the loss, allowing four runs (two earned) on seven hits.
Webster (6-10) will play Maryville at 2 p.m. and Blackburn at 4 p.m. today in the SLIAC Round Robin at ABC Park.
