SAUGET, IL - For two and a half innings, Blackburn was an inspired baseball team with aspirations of an upset. For two and a half innings. But those aspirations faded rapidly as the Webster offense exploded against the Beaver pitching to the tune of 24 runs in the St. Louis Intercollegiate Athletic Conference doubleheader sweep, 9-5 and 15-5, Tuesday at GCS Ballpark.
BC scored a run in the first, then took advantage of a couple defensive miscues to secure four second-inning runs. The four-run rally chased the WU starter, Eric Broughton. Once Broughton exited, so did the Beaver offense, thanks to reliever Bryan Stanley (3-1). The right-hander didn't allow a Blackburn hit in his 4 2/3 innings of work and he added six strikeouts.
While Stanley kept the BC bats frigid as the air outside, Webster used two separate four-run innings of its own to escape any potential upset bid.
Webster's third inning started innocently as the Gorloks had a runner on second with two outs. But three straight singles by junior
Dakota Huey, sophomore
Craig Schaefer and senior
Andrew Fuiten pushed four runs across, pulling WU to within one run.
Freshman
Joe Biagini capped a four-run fifth with his two-run double, scoring Schaefer and Fuiten. The other two runs crossed the plate on a two-run single by Fuiten.
Fuiten finished the game 2-for-2 with four RBI, while Biagini and Huey each had two RBI. Huey was 3-for-4 with two runs scored.
The possible aftereffects of BC's blown five-run lead could have reared its ugly head as Webster took control of the nightcap with a seven-run second inning. The Gorloks continued to play add-on, scoring in every subsequent inning, including a game-cinching four-run fifth.
Huey carried the biggest stick in the second game, going 2-for-4 with a career-high five RBI. Sophomore
Paul Kienker added two RBI without having to swing the bat. The outfielder drew a bases loaded walk in the fifth and a bases loaded hit batter in the sixth.
Senior
Will Savage (3-1) earned the victory, allowed one earned run on six hits in five innings. He added seven strikeouts with one walk.
Webster (11-9, 8-0 SLIAC) will step away from conference action Wednesday as the Gorloks play Missouri-St. Louis on the campus of SIU-Edwardsville.
