Huey, Broughton lead Gorloks

(Illinois College Box Score) (Spring Break Game Notes)

Senior right-hander Eric Broughton hurled eight scoreless innings as Webster opened the 2009 campaign with an 8-0 victory over Illinois College Thursday at GCS Ballpark. It was the first time since 2004 Webster has opened the season with a victory.

Senior OF Dakota Huey was 4-for-4 with two doubles, two runs scored and an RBI to pace the WU offense.

The Gorloks (1-0) are off to Florida where they will play Keystone College Saturday.

Webster took advantage of some Blueboys wildness to blow the game open in the eighth. WU pieced together two hits with four walks to put a five-spot on the board. Junior SS Zach Little capped the scoring with a two-out, two-run single.

Senior C John Combs got the scoring underway with a solo homerun in the second inning. Webster followed with single runs in the third and fifth innings. Senior OF Andrew Fuiten scored Huey in the third, then Huey drove home junior 2B Aaron Senzell with a double in the fifth.

Broughton (1-0) struck out a career-high nine in his eight innings of work, allowing four hits and walking one.
