Baseball Inches Closer to Regular Season Crown

Game Statistics

SAUGET, IL - Thanks to some timely offense and steady work from the bullpen, Webster moved closer to claiming its third consecutive St. Louis Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (SLIAC) regular season championship.

With the combination of the Gorloks' 11-0 victory Friday over Principia at GCS Ballpark and Maryville's 10-2 loss to Fontbonne, Webster can secure the title with a doubleheader sweep at Principia 1 p.m. Saturday.

The combination of Bryan Stanley and Bryce Law hurled 4 2/3 of scoreless relief allowing four hits with eight strikeouts. Stanley (5-1) picked up his fifth victory, all in relief, with 3 2/3 inning of work. He struck out six and allowed four hits. Webster's top three relievers have allowed just two earned runs over their last 37 1/3 innings. In addition, the Gorlok staff stretched their scoreless inning streak to 15 innings.

Principia has several chances to dent the plate, but the WU pitchers skirted trouble all game long. The Panthers stranded 11 runners through the first four innings, including bases loaded situations in the second and third innings.

Solo home runs by Joe Biagini and Aaron Senzell gave Webster a 2-0 lead in the second inning. Senzell has been torrid of late, hitting .424 (14-for-33) in the last nine games. The second baseman has recorded a hit in seven of the nine games.

Webster took advantage of a Principia error to produce three unearned runs in the fifth. A dropped fly ball, which would have been the third out, brought home a run and extended the inning. The extra out produced two more runs on Craig Schaefer's sixth home run of the season.

Middle infielders Senzell and Zach Little each went 2-for-3 with two runs scored and two RBI. Andrew Fuiten extended his hitting streak to eight with a sixth-inning, two RBI single.

Six more runs, four unearned, crossed the plate in the sixth inning to give Webster the 11-0 bulge.

Prior to the game, Webster honored its four seniors - Alex Raetzloff, Eric Broughton, Fuiten and Kyle Starnes. Broughton, a starting pitcher, pulled the offensive trifecta. He had his first career hit, first career RBI and first career run scored - all in the sixth inning.
