Webster finishes up sweep of Griffins

A SLIAC doubleheader that was supposed to be a fierce battle turned out to be nothing more than a whimper as Webster defeated Fontbonne 17-2 and 8-1 at GCS Ballpark in Sauget, IL.

Game 1 of the doubleheader between Webster and Fontbonne looked like any other close game going into the bottom of the 4th.  That is until, with 2 outs in the inning, Nathan Shelton hit a hard line drive to the Fontbonne leftfielder who misplayed the ball and allowed it to go to the wall.  After the error Webster scored 11 straight runs, all with 2 outs, and the rout was on.

By the time the dust settled the Gorloks were victorious 17-2 to move to 13-10 on the season and 10-0 in the SLIAC.  Pitcher Eric Broughton picked up his 3rd win on the season.

In the 2nd game of the day Webster continued right where they left off game 1.

Alex Raetzloff hit a lead off homerun in the bottom of the 1st to put the Gorloks up 1-0 and they never looked back.

Will Savage continued to look impressive, as he has for most of the 2009 campaign, leading the Gorloks to an 8-1 victory over the Griffins.

Interesting Facts
Andrew Fuiten’s home run to lead off the 4th inning of game 2 was his 6th of the season and 18th of his career as a Gorlok.  It tied him with Patrick McSheehy, 2009 SLIAC Hall of Fame member,  for the career lead in home runs.

In game 1 of the DH relief pitcher John DuHadway took his first career at bat for the Gorloks in bottom of the 6th.  He reached 1st on a throwing error by Fontbonne 3rd baseman Thomas Hunt.

Today’s 2 wins make it 26 straight SLIAC home victories for the Gorloks.
