Gorloks Fall in Opener

HIGHLAND, IL - If the Webster baseball is going to advance to their third straight regional championship, they are going to have to do it the hard way.

A two-out solo home run in the seventh inning provided Fontbonne with its winning margin as Webster fell in the opening round of the 2009 St. Louis Intercollegiate Athletic Conference tournament Thursday, 6-5, at Glik Park. It was the first time a SLIAC school has defeated Webster this season. The Gorloks will drop to the loser's bracket, and face Greenville at 9:30 p.m. tonight. The loser will be eliminated from the tournament.

Webster never led in the game as the Griffins scored two runs in the top of the first inning. The Gorloks pulled to within one as Nathan Shelton scored on a wild pitch in the second inning. Looking to pad its cushion, Fontbonne went back to work in the third - tallying two runs.

The three run advantage was short lived as the Gorloks put three runs on the board in the third, two coming on a single by Joe Biagini and another following an Aaron Senzell single.

Fontbonne reclaimed the lead in the fourth, but Senzell knotted the contest with an RBI.

Junior Bryan Stanley (5-2) absorbed the loss, allowing one earned run on three hits in 5 2/3 innings of relief. He also struck out a career-high seven in his season-long relief appearance. Stanley also went 5 2/3 innings in his only start of the season during spring break.

The Gorloks had its chances as they left a runner on base in eight of the nine innings, and 13 runners total.
