Like a mythical Phoenix, the Webster University men's soccer team is rising from early season "ashes." The Gorloks extended their unbeaten string to three with a 2-1 conference victory at Blackburn College on September 29.
Webster ended the half tied 0-0 despite outshooting the Beavers 12-5. Keeping the pressure on in the second half, the Gorloks got on the board when junior Brian Enger (Mehlville HS, STL) scored at the 51:51 mark on a feed from junior Mike Mantia (Webster Groves HS, STL).
Webster increased the lead to 2-0 at the 61:14 mark on a goal by senior Mike Riti (Webster Groves, STL), assisted by junior Kyle Leifield (Marquette HS, STL). The goal was the first on the year for Riti who led the Gorloks with 15 in 2008. Webster outshot the Beavers 25-9 for the game.
The men are 2-0-1 in their last three games and are now 2-0 in the St. Louis Intercollegiate Athletic Conference. The team is in action again on October 3 at defending SLIAC champion Fontbonne University for a rare Saturday night game at 8:00 p.m.
