Schaefer, Valdez Power Gorloks to Split

Webster 11-3, DePauw University 6-4

The Webster University men's baseball team picked up a double-header split with DePauw University in Greencastle, IN, on March 16, winning the opener, 11-6, before dropping the second, 4-3, in 10 innings.  Craig Schaefer (JR, Carterville HS, IL) led the attack in the Gorlok victory, while starter David Mueller (SO, Westminster Christian Academy, STL) picked up his first win on the season.

Schaefer raised his season average to .448 in the DH, going four-for five with a home run and four RBIs in the win.  Mueller pitched the first six innings, allowing four earned runs, and John DuHadway (SR, Christian Brothers HS, STL), went the final three innings for the team's first save of the year.

The Gorloks used a five-run third to take control of the contest.  Tony Genna (JR, Lyons Township HS, IL) reached on an error and Victor Valdez (SR, Benet Academy, IL) followed with a two-run homer.  Joe Biagini (SO, Glenbard South HS, IL) singled before Schaefer hit a two-run homer as well.  Webster had a 5-2 lead but DePauw scored two in the bottom half of the third to make it 5-4.  Three more Gorlok runs in the top of the fourth gave them some insurance as they extended the lead to four.

In the nightcap, Will Savage (SR, Benet Academy, IL) got the start and pitched six innings, allowing only two hits, and one unearned run.  Webster led 2-1 after seven but found themselves down by one heading into the ninth.  The Gorloks tied the game and had the bases loaded with no one out, but couldn't push across the go-ahead run.  DePauw scored the game winner in the bottom of the 10th.  Genna was two for five with a SB and RBI.  He ended the double-header hitting .414 for the young season.

Webster hosts four games at GCS Ballpark this weekend, including a day/night double-header on March 21.  Franklin College (IN) visits on March 19, North Park University (IL) on March 20, and Dominican University (IL) and Concordia University on March 21.
