Gorloks Repel Vikings, 2-1 & 2-0

Savage, Mueller Pitch Strong Starts

An impromptu rearrangement of the Webster University men's baseball schedule found better weather and better results as the Gorloks downed the North Park University Vikings, 2-1 & 2-0 on March 22 at GCS Balllpark.  Will Savage (SR, Benet Academy, IL) pitched a complete game shutout in the nightcap and David Mueller (SO, Westminster Christian Academy, STL) pitched eight strong innings in the opener.

North Park was originally scheduled as part of the Webster Classic for March 19-21, but the forecast of inclement weather moved its contest to the 22nd as part of a double-header.  The weather cooperated with sunshine and warmer temperatures, and the Gorlok pitching staff responded with quality innings.  Mueller scattered four hits and two walks, while allowing one run, and Savage allowed four hits and two walks, while striking out nine in the shutout win.  Savage saw his 1.38 earned run average take a dip and earned his first victory of the year.

Down 1-0 after eight innings in game one, Bryan Stanley (SR, Larkin HS, IL) pitched a scoreless ninth in relief of Mueller, and the Gorloks hitters went to work.  Aaron Senzel (SR, Harrison HS, IN) led off the ninth with a single and pinch-runner Paul Kienker (JR, St. John Vianney HS, STL) was sacrificed to second.  Anthony Genna (JR, Lyons Township HS, IL) doubled in the right-field gap, scoring the tying run.  Cody Stevenson (FR, Centralia HS, IL) followed with a single up the middle to score the game winner.

In the nightcap, Webster scored two runs in the fifth, with a two-run, two-out double by Nathan Shelton (JR, Northwest HS, STL) driving home Genna and Joe Biagini (SO, Glenbard South HS, IL).  That was all the Gorloks needed as Savage pitched their first shutout of the season.

The Gorloks defeated a very capable North Park squad who entered the double-header with a 7-2 record.  Webster is 6-5 on the season and heads to Eureka College on March 27-28 for its first action in the St. Louis Intercollegiate Athletic Conference for 2010.
