Softball Team Wins Two in SLIAC Preview

The Webster University women's softball team got a preview of the St. Louis Intercollegiate Athletic Conference competition, defeating MacMurray College (IL), 10-7, and Greenville College, 5-1, in Springfield, IL, on March 27.  The games were part of the SLIAC pre-season 'Round Robin.'  A four-run eighth inning propelled the Gorloks to victory in the opener, and another pitching gem by Megan Sperry (SR, Clarkston HS, IL) led to the win in the nightcap.

The Gorloks lead MacMurray, 6-3 in the seventh but couldn't hold the lead.  MacMurray took a one-run lead in the top of the eighth, but a four-run rally secured the win.  Jessica Arcangel (FR, St. Lucy's Priory, CA) was four for five with three rbis to pace the Webster 18-hit attack. Cassie Mosier (SR, LeRoy HS, IL), Sam Dittmann (SR, St. Pius X, STL), and Ashley Meagher (FR, Dupo HS, IL) all had three hits for the game.  Meagher picked up the win in relief.

Sperry pitched a complete game in the win over Greenville, allowing one run on four hits.  Arcangel was two for two with a double off the top of the outfield fence, just missing the season's first home run.  Mosier and Dittmann each had two hits, with Dittmann, Meghan Lokey (SO, Hazelwood West HS, STL), and Erynn Coit (JR, Forsyth Maroa HS, IL) all picking up rbis.

Two more contests originally scheduled for March 26 vs. Fontbonne University and Westminster College for the Round Robin were cancelled due to field conditions.  Webster is 7-7 on the season and begins SLIAC conference play on March 30 with a double-header at Principia College (IL).  Principia has not fielded a softball team since the 1999 season.
