The Webster University men's baseball team started the 2010 season in the win column with a 2-1 victory over Benedictine University (IL) in Davenport, FL, on March 6. The Gorloks got strong pitching from
David Mueller (SO, Westminster Christian Academy, STL), and
Bryan Stanley (SR, Larkin HS, IL), who got the win in relief.
Mueller, who got the call for the opening day start, pitched six and two-third innings, allowing only four hits and no earned runs, while striking out nine. Stanley pitched the final two and a third innings in relief, picking up the win when the Gorloks scored on a "walk-off" sacrifice fly by
Craig Schaefer (JR, Carterville HS, IL).
Victor Valdez (SR, Benet Academy, IL) doubled to start the bottom of the ninth, and scored on Schaefer'f fly to left.
The Gorloks are back in action on March 7 versus Mt. St. Mary College (NY). Webster will play eight games in Davenport in the Central Florida Invitational.
