The Webster University men’s baseball team strengthened its hold on first place in the St. Louis Intercollegiate Athletic Conference with a double-header sweep of Spalding University (KY),3-2 and 5-2, at GCS Ballpark on April 10. The Gorloks improved to 8-0 in the SLIAC and have won 38 straight league games. Brian Stanley (SR, Larkin HS, IL) picked up two wins in relief as he raised his record to 6-1.
Webster won Game 1 in eight innings as
Aaron Senzell (SR, Harrison HS, IN) drove home
John Combs (SR, Macomb HS, IL) with the game winner with two outs in the bottom of the eighth.
Bryan Stanley (SR, Larkin HS, IL) pitched one and one-third innings of relief to pick up his fifth win of the season. Stanley bailed Webster out of a bases-loaded jam in the sixth, coaxing a pop-up for the third out.
Starter
David Mueller (SO, Westminster Christian Academy, STL) scattered four hits and three walks in six and two-thirds innings, allowing two runs with one earned.
Dakota Huey (SR, Highland HS, IL) was three for four with a run scored.
In Game 2, Stanley once again bailed out the Gorloks, pitching out of a bases-loaded jam in the sixth inning. A scoreless seventh earned Stanley his sixth win.
Will Savage (SR, Benet Academy, IL) started and pitched five and two-thirds inning in the game, allowing two runs on five hits.
A Senzell sacrifice fly in the bottom of the sixth gave the Gorloks a 3-2 lead, and a
Zach Little (SR, Ritenour HS, STL) double plated two more insurance runs to put Webster up 5-2 for the final score. Little and
Cody Stevenson (FR, Centralia HS, IL) were two for three with two RBIs.
Webster completes its three game series with Spalding at 3 pm on April11 at GCS. The Gorloks travel to Blackburn College on April 13 for a double-header.
