Valdez Has Grand Time As Gorloks Sweep Highlanders

Hold Onto First in the SLIAC

The Webster University men's baseball team scored in double figures for the fourth consecutive game, and for the 14th time this season, as it defeated MacMurray College (IL), 19-1 and 16-3, at GCS Ballpark on April 18.  Victor Valdez (SR, Benet Academy, IL) led the offense in game one, hitting back-to-back grand slam home runs in the second and third innings.  The Gorloks had seven extra base hits in that game and added six more in the nightcap.

Valdez' slams capped a nine-run second, and a seven-run third inning.  They were his 10th and 11th on the season.  Valdez finished three for four with eight RBIs.  Chris Bielanski (SO, Glenbrook South HS, IL) had a solo shot in game one, his first on the year.   Cody Stevenson (FR, Centralia HS, IL) and Zach Little (SR, Ritenour HS, STL) were both three for five, with three runs scored, and Little drove in four runs.  In addition to 17 Gorlok hits, the team received seven walks and had five hit batsmen, four in the second inning alone.

John DuHadway (SR, Christian Brothers HS, STL) pitched five innings in game one, and picked up his third win of the season.  He is 3-1 on the year.  In game two, Bryce Law (SR, Rochelle HS, IL) got the start and picked up his second win of the season.  He struck out seven and allowed two earned runs, three total, in six innings pitched.

Catcher Craig Schaefer (JR, Carterville HS, IL) had the lone Webster home run in game two, but the team added six doubles as part of its 15-hit attack.  Schaefer finished three for four with three runs scored, and John Combs (SR, Macomb HS, IL), acting as the designated hitter, went three for three, with three runs scored.  Paul Kienker (JR, St. John Vianney HS, STL) had the most unusual line score of the day, going one for one with one run scored and four RBIs.  Kienker had two sacrifice flies and a walk, to go along with a two-run double.

Webster is in first place, at 13-1, in the St. Louis Intercollegiate Athletic Conference, and 21-7 overall.  The Gorloks travel to Washington University for a single nine-inning contest on April 19, then return to GCS Ballpark for another single nine-inning affair vs. Blackburn College (IL) on April 21.
