The Webster University men's baseball team won at Washington University on April 19, 4-1, as
Will Savage (SR, Benet Academy, IL) continued his standout 2010 season with his fourth complete game, raising his record to 5-0 on the year. Savage saw his earned run average drop to 1.71 as Webster improved to 22-7 on the year.
Webster completed a three game sweep of the season's series with Washington University, but this game was much closer than an earlier double-header win over the Bears at GCS Ballpark. The Gorloks broke on top 3-0 in the third as
Victor Valdez (SR, Benet Academy, IL) and
Joe Biagini (SO, Glenbard South HS, IL) singled to lead off the inning. Valdez scored on a double by
Craig Schaefer (JR, Carterville HS, IL), and a triple by
John Combs (SR, Macomb HS, IL) cleared the bases.
Combs added a solo home run, his second of the year, in the sixth and finished the day with three RBIs. Savage spread out five singles, a double, and a walk in the nine-ining contest, and was nicked for a lone run in the eighth by the Bears. Other than the run, only two other Bears reached second against Savage, who had five strikeouts for the game.
The Gorloks return to GCS Ballpark to take on Blackburn College (IL) on April 21 at an unusual weekday start, of 12 noon. It will be Senior Night on April 23 at GCS, in a double-header against Principia College (IL).
