The Webster University men’s baseball team beat Eureka College (IL), 8-5, in the first round of the St. Louis Intercollegiate Athletic Conference tournament at Glik Park in Highland, IL, on May 13. The Gorloks relied on the long ball to come from behind, and stellar relief by
Bryan Stanley (SR, Larkin HS, IL) to hold onto the victory.
Trailing 5-3 in the bottom of the seventh, the Gorloks manufactured five runs with two outs. After
Nathan Shelton (JR, Northwest HS, STL) reached on a HBP,
Dakota Huey (SR, Highland HS, IL), playing in his home town, drove a two-run homer to left center field to tie the game. A walk and a single later,
Victor Valdez (SR, Benet Academy, IL) hit a tape measure shot to center field for his 13th home run of the season, and an 8-5 lead.
Stanley pitched the final three and one-third innings, allowing one hit, one walk, and no runs, while striking out five. Stanley picked up his team leading eighth victory and lowered his ERA to 2.25 on the season.
