The Webster University men’s baseball team advanced to the St. Louis Intercollegiate Athletic Conference finals with an 8-1 win over Fontbonne University at Glik Park in Highland, IL, on May 14.
Will Savage (SR, Benet Academy, IL) raised his season record to 8-0, and the Gorlok offense used the long ball again to fuel a big inning.
Savage pitched eight innings, allowed four hits and no runs, and tied his season high with nine strikeouts. His 145 total strikeouts, and 15 wins, both rank third on Webster’s all-time career list.
Victor Valdez (SR, Benet Academy, IL) and
John Combs (SR, Macomb HS, IL) powered the Gorloks in a six-run fifth inning that broke open a 1-0 game. Valdez hit a three-run homer that disappeared into the night, giving Webster a 5-0 lead. Combs stepped in three batters later and hit an opposite field two-run shot to make it 7-0.
Webster will face Greenville College (IL) at 3:30 p.m. in the tournament finals on May 15 at Glik Park. A win would give the Gorloks the tournament championship. A loss would drop them into a single game elimination final that would be played immediately following.
