Gorloks Ride Second Dominant Start to NCAA 2nd Round Win

Webster 7 Rose-Hulman Institute 1

The #22-ranked Webster University men’s baseball team beat Rose-Hulman Institute of Technology (IN), 7-1, in the second round of the NCAA III Tournament Central Regional on May 21 in Moline, IL. David Mueller (SO, Westminster Christian Academy, STL) pitched the second straight complete game victory in two NCAA Tournament games for the Gorloks.

Mueller kept the Engineers off-balance with a steady diet of breaking balls, allowing four hits, four walks, and one run, while striking out eight. Mueller improved to 8-1 on the season and becomes the third Gorlok pitcher with eight wins for the season.

At the plate, Victor Valdez (SR, Benet Academy, IL) set the Webster single season all-time high in HRs, hitting his 15 and 16th, both over the left-centerfield wall. Valdez increased his season record total of RBIs to 68, with four on the day. John Combs (SR, Macomb HS, IL) was two for four with two RBIs and Nathan Shelton (JR, Northwest HS, STL) was two for three, with a run scored and a walk.

The Gorloks are 35-9 on the season. The NCAA second round win was Webster’s first in five tries, advancing it to a third round match-up with Illinois Wesleyan University in the winner’s bracket on May 22. The starting time for that game will be 11:00 a.m.
