Dittmann Powers Gorloks to SLIAC Title

The Webster University women's softball team won its seventh St. Louis Intercollegiate Athletic Conference title, defeating Greenville College (IL), 10-1 and 13-4, at the University of Missouri-St. Louis on May 4.  Sam Dittmann (SR, St. Pius X HS, STL) continued her remarkable offensive surge, hitting four consecutive home runs in the double-header.

Webster has won seven titles outright, and shared two others, giving it nine SLIAC first-place finishes in the program's 14-year history.  The Gorloks won their last eight league contests to close out the SLIAC regular season at 14-2.  Webster will have the number one seed in the post-season tournament which begins on May 6 at ABC Park in St. Ann.

Dittmann's offensive onslaught helped drive the Gorloks in the stretch drive.  She has 14 hits in her last 29 at-bats, with seven home runs and 25 RBIs in that span.  Dittman now ranks first in the SLIAC in RBIs and is tied for second in home runs.  He .351 batting average is 120 points over her career average. She got the evening started with a two-run homer in the first inning of the opener to give the Gorloks a 3-0 lead.  Another two-run shot in the third helped pad Webster's lead to 7-0.

Dittmann hit a three-run blast in the fourth inning to put Webster up 10-1, and that was her final at-bat as the game ended after 4 1/2 innings via the eight-run 'mercy' rule.  She saved her best for last, though, coming to the plate with the bases loaded in the first inning of the nightcap.  Dittmann cleared the left-center field fence for a grand slam.  After a walk in the second, Dittmann almost made it five in a row in the fifth, backing up the right fielder for a catch at the fence to end the string.

The Gorloks received a scare when Megan Sperry (SR, Clarkston HS, MI), the ace of the staff, was hit on her right pitching arm by an errant throw in the fourth inning of game one.  Sperry was forced to leave the game and will be evaluated day to day.  Sperry missed winning her 10th, but Lexie Moore (SR, Champaign Central HS, IL) threw the final inning and two thirds, picking up her first win of the season.

Ashley Meagher (FR, Dupo HS, IL) relieved Moore in the nighcap and raised her record to 7-1 by pitching six innings, allowing no hits or runs, and striking out eight.  Cassie Mosier (SR, LeRoy HS, IL) also homered in game one, hitting her first of the season.

The Gorloks are 21-11 overall.  Webster will meet Greenville in the first round of the SLIAC tournament at ABC Park on May 6 at 5:00 pm  It is a double elimination tournament, assuring the Gorloks of a second round game at 7:00 pm that evening also.
