The Webster University women's softball team squeaked through the first round of the St. Louis Intercollegiate Athletic Conference tournament, but stumbled in the second round. Webster will have to win out to secure an NCAA berth after losing to Fontbonne College, 1-0, at ABC Park in St. Ann on May 6. Ashley Meagher (FR, Dupo HS, IL) started against Fontbonne and gave Webster the strong start it needed, allowing four hits and one unearned run. She was outdueled as the Gorloks could only muster two hits by
Cassie Mosier (SR, LeRoy HS, IL) and lost 1-0 to Fontbonne in the second round contest. Webster will have to battle through the 'losers' bracket to win the tournament and get back to the NCAAs.
Meghan Lokey (SO, Hazelwood West HS, STL) got the start in the 7-6 opening round victory against Greenville. Lokey gave the Gorloks six and a third innings, allowing six hits and six runs, three earned, and turned the game over to Meagher as Greenville rallied in the seventh Meagher closed out the game and earned her first save of the year. Lokey struck out eight Panthers, as Webster faced Greenville for the third straight game.
Mosier went two for four, with a run scored and an RBI in the game.
Jessica Arcangel (St. Lucy's Priory HS, CA) added to her strong freshman season, going two for four with a run scored and an RBI also.
The Gorloks were missing ace
Megan Sperry (SR, Clarkston HS, MI), who was nursing an injury, and who's availability is being evaluated on a day-to-day basis. Webster (22-12) will face Eureka College (IL) at 6:30 p.m. on May 7 at ABC Park. The winner will face Fontbonne at 8:30 p.m. in the double elimination format. If another game is needed to determine the championship, it will take place at ABC Park on May 8 at a time to be determined.
The SLIAC 2010 All-Conference Softball team will be announced that evening. Players of the Week selections for the 2010 season will be honored as well.
