The Webster University women's softball team is headed to the St. Louis Intercollegiate Athletic Conference championship game. Facing elimination, the Gorloks picked up two wins,11-0 over Eureka College (IL), and 3-0 over Fontbonne University, on May 7 at ABC Park. Webster excelled in all aspects of the game as strong starting pitching, an offense infused with power, and a stout defense, secured both victories.
Megan Sperry (SR, Clarkston HS, MI), who missed the first two tournament games with an injury, pitched a complete five-inning shutout over Eureka, allowing two infield singles and no walks. Sperry, who lost a victory when she couldn't complete five innings her previous start because of the injury, picked up her 10th win of the season.
Sam Dittmann (SR, St. Pius X HS, STL) paced the 14-hit offense with two home runs, her eighth and ninth, and five RBIs.
Ashley Bolton (JR, Knob Noster HS, MO) was three for three with two runs scored and
Jessica Arcangel (FR, St. Lucy's Priory HS, CA) was two for three with three RBIs.
Erynn Coit (SR, Forsyth Maroa HS, (IL) hit her first home run of the season.
Webster advanced to the championship series where the Gorloks would need to win two straight from the Griffins in the double elimination format.
Ashley Meagher (FR, Dupo HS, IL), who had given up a single earned run in 14 previous innings vs. Fontbonne, was given the starting assignment. Meagher responded to the challenge by throwing a complete game shutout, allowing two hits and no walks to raise her season record to 8-2..
The Gorloks used the long ball once again as Dittmann hit her 10th of the season to give her team a 1-0 lead in the second. After manufacturing a run in the fifth to go up 2-1, Arcangel bombed her third home run of the season to give Webster an additional insurance run. Meagher, seemingly getting stronger as the game progressed, struck out the final two batters looking to end the game.
Dittmann moved into third on the all-time Webster RBI list (46) and fourth in home runs (10). Five Gorloks, including Arcangel, Dittmann, and Sperry, along with
Meghan Lokey (SO, Hazelwood West HS, STL) and
Cassie Mosier (SR, LeRoy HS, IL), were named SLIAC First Team All-Conference. A complete list of Webster honorees will be forthcoming.
Webster faces Fontbonne for the championship at 6:30 p.m. at ABC Park on Saturday, May 8. The winner will advance to the NCAA III tournament.
