Sad End...But A Successful Season

The Webster University women's softball season closed the door on a successful 2010 campaign with a loss in the St. Louis Intercollegiate Athletic Conference championship to Fontbonne University, 7-3, at ABC Park on May 8.  Despite battling their way out of the 'losers' bracket to force a one-game showdown, the Gorlok's potent offense couldn't break through against solid Griffin relief pitching after taking an early lead.

Webster had won three of four vs. Fontbonne this season entering the contest, but had relied on excellent starting pitching, yielding just three runs, two earned, in those four games.  The Gorloks could not duplicate that feat a fifth time.  After scoring three first inning runs, they were outscored 7-0 the rest of the way.  A Jessica Arcangel (SR, St. Lucy's Priory HS, CA) two-run first inning blast to center, her fourth HR of the season, was the lone Webster offensive highlight.

Arcangel, Sam Dittmann (St. Pius X HS, STL), and Ashley Meagher (FR, Dupo HS, IL) were all named to the SLIAC 2010 All-Tournament Team.

The SLIAC regular season champs finished with a 24-13 overall record, 14-2 in conference.  The title was Webster's fourth straight, and a SLIAC record ninth total in its 14 seasons of play.  The Gorloks bid goodbye to fours seniors, Erynn Coit (Forsyth Maroa HS, IL), Dittmann, Lexie Moore (Champaign Central HS, IL), and Megan Sperry (Clarkston HS, MI).

Sperry finished seventh in wins and fifth in strikeouts on Webster's all-time list.  She finished the season with a 10-3 record.  Dittmann finishes third in RBIs for a season (46) and fourth in home runs (10).  Meagher had the seventh highest win percentage (.800) for a pitcher and  Arcangel's .435 batting average ties her for ninth on the single season list.

The Gorloks had nine players selected to SLIAC All-Conference teams as well (see separate story).
