The Webster University men's soccer team suffered a heart-breaking, 1-0, loss to Fontbonne University, as the Griffins scored a goal at the 89:52 mark, in a game on October 12, at Gay Field in Clayton. The Gorloks' stout defense held off Fontbonne until a Griffin crossing pass was headed in to send Webster home empty-handed.
Goalkeeper Alex Cupp (Lutheran South HS), fresh off a second straight St. Louis Intercollegiate Athletic Conference Defensive Soccer Player of the Week selection, made several sprawling deflections to save goals. But Cupp had little chance to stop the bang-bang header that was the game winner.
The Gorloks weren't able to muster a goal, and had limited chances to score throughout the contest against the first-place Griffins. Just when it looked like the game was headed into overtime for a possible win or tie, lightning struck.
Webster falls to 2-1 in the SLIAC, and will travel to Jacksonville, IL, on October 15 to face MacMurray College before hosting three straight games at the Soccer Park.
