Softball Gets the Ball Rolling in Mississippi

Gorloks Off to 2-0 Start for 2011 Season

The Webster University women’s softball team opened up its 2011 campaign with a two-game sweep in Mississippi on February 25. The Gorloks defeated Millsaps College (MS), 2-1, in the season opener, and won the nightcap, 7-6, in eight innings over Mississippi College. Both teams provided strong competition for the Gorloks to open their 2011 campaign.

Webster is coming off a 24-13 season in 2010. The Gorloks captured the St. Louis Intercollegiate Athletic Conference regular season title for the fourth straight season with a 14-2 record, and the ninth time in the team’s 14-year history. This year’s edition was selected in the SLIAC pre-season coaches’ poll to finish second in 2011, a prediction the team hopes to disprove.

The Gorloks jumped into action, defeating a Millsaps team that went 24-18 in 2010 in the rugged Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference. Mississippi went 29-13 in the equally competitive American Southwest Conference.Megan Lokey (JR, Hazelwood West HS) had the complete game win against Millsaps for the Gorloks.

Ashley Meagher (SO, Dupo HS, IL) and Trisha Thompson (FR, Xavier Prep HS, AZ) making her debut on the mound for Webster, shared the pitching duties in the nightcap victory over Mississippi. Thompson picked up her first win as the Gorloks took the win in extra innings.

Hannah Brindisi (JR, John A Logan CC, IL) homered against Millsaps, in her first game for Webster.  A two run shot, the round tripper provided all the runs the Gorloks would need.  Brindisi picked up two more RBIs against Mississippi.

The team will play Millsaps and Mississippi again on February 26, to close out the road trip. After taking a week off, the Gorloks will spend spring break in Florida for the ‘Rebel Games’ in Orlando. Webster will play eight games over five days, against seven different opponents.
