Gorloks Settle for Split in Home Opener

Webster 3 Concordia 1 Franklin 11 Webster 0

The Webster University men’s baseball team split two games at GCS Ballpark on March 19, beating Concordia University (IL), 3-1, and losing to Franklin College (IN), 11-1. Tom Henke (JR, Forest Park CC) hit a walk-off home run to end the victory over Concordia in dramatic fashion but the Gorloks came out flat and took the loss to Franklin in the nightcap.

Henke’s heroics followed Gorlok starter David Mueller (JR, Westminster Christian Academy) matching his Concordia counterpart in a pitching duel, allowing only three hits and one run in eight innings of work. Webster tied the game in the eighth on a run by Matt Moore (JR, St. Joseph’s College, IN). Moore scored on an error and a wild pitch, after lead off the inning with a single. Steven Dooley (SO, Florissant Valley CC) came on and pitched a 1-2-3 ninth, picking up his second win of the season.

In the second game, four-run outbursts in the third and fourth innings put Webster in a 9-0 hole. Freshman Brandon Shaw (North Fulton HS, IL) started his third game and took the loss, his first decision as a Gorlok. The Webster offense was quiet on the day, mustering only nine hits. The Gorloks are 7-2 on the season.

Webster is right back in action on March 20 vs. Wartburg College (IA). The Gorloks travel to Bloomington, IL, on March 26 where they will face Concordia again, and Illinois Wesleyan University.
