Softball Sweeps Pair at Marriott Tournament

The Webster University women's softball team swept a pair of games at the Marriott West Tournament, defeating Augustana College (IL), 6-5, and Coe College (IA), 12-6, on March 20 at host Washington University.  The Gorloks broke a five-game losing streak in fine fashion, holding on for a 6-5 win in the opener and coming from behind to win 12-6 in the second game.

Meghan Lokey (JR, Hazelwood West HS) went the distance in the opener, as the Gorloks took a 6-0 lead into the bottom of the seventh inning.  The Vikings rallied, picking up four runs on a grand slam, and had loaded the bases again with two outs before Lokey coaxed the final batter to fly out to left.

In the nightcap vs. Coe, the Gorloks had leads of 2-0 and 4-2, but fell behind 6-4 in the fifth inning.  A Webster three-run rally in the fifth put the Gorloks back ahead, 7-6.  Hanna Brindisi (JR, John A. Logan CC, IL) helped break the game open with a bases-loaded clearing double.  Ashley Meagher (SO, Dupo HS, IL), picked up the win for Webster.

Coe was ranked 19th in the nation in NCAA III coming into the contest.  Webster improved to 9-7 on the season.  The Gorloks travel to Jacksonville, IL, on March 23 to take on Illinois College in a double-header.  They begin play in the St. Louis Intercollegiate Athletic Conference Round Robin on March 25 vs. Spalding University (KY) and Fontbonne University at ABC Park in St. Ann.
